Didn’t see a good site at IBM to explain the architecture anymore, but the RPG programming environment you describe takes advantage of the AS/400 architecture. It has a high level machine interface (used to called TIMI) and the DB2 is implemented in the microcode. So, the machine makes a lot of assumptions and handles things that one would have to program for in other environments like opening and closing files. User profiles and authorities are part of the OS and object authorities are controlled by the OS. Library pathing is also important in programming and is used in testing, and multiple production versions with a lot of flexibility. Wish I could find a site for you, but in your interview don’t assume the AS/400 is like any other environments you may be aware of….
