Oracle RDBMS on Windows (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows has become an increasingly popular platform for the deployment of database applications. The challenges to doing this successfully can be considerable. Database applications must simultaneously provide high performance, reliability, and scalability, all at a low total cost of ownership. Oracle Database 10g on Windows provides these capabilities.

The Oracle Database supports Windows operating systems on both Itanium and AMD64/EM64T hardware. b.

You really do NOT want to run Oracle database on your laptop.

    To break this down…
RDBMS 10G, when started with default configuration for Oracle Apps R12 or 11i will take little less than 1GB of SGA, and 2GB of total memory – just for database. Running Apps mean you would be running concurrent managers, forms, and web services. They will take total of 2GB for minimal configuration. (that’s 4GB so far)

Also remember, 11i takes 100G, R12 takes 200G of disk space to install.

If you want to do this for Windows platform, you’d need Windows server 2000 or 2003. The RDBMS and Apps will NOT run on XP.

Client will be web based, and it will easily run on any XP box.

You won’t be running Tools such as SQL developer, Toad (that’s not Oracle utility), Forms and Reports at all times. You can just shut down apps if you need more resources.

It will be far cheaper and better for you to buy a small server or good desktop, load Linux and run the database and apps, separately from your laptop.

Running all of this on laptop, not only require you’d run server OS on your laptop, but will require a HUGE laptop… very impractical.

At my house, I run 11i and R12 on Linux box with 3GB memory and 1TB of disk space on a small server. They run just fine, if I cut down the number of managers.

I then access it from my PC running XP.
