My father passed away in Colombia when i was 13, i am now 19 and have recalled some inheritance that i believe i should have recieved. I was named the beneficiary for his estate, and after his death all i recieved in the mail was a small box with about $10 worth of stuff..which was supposedly his estate. Before he went to Colombia on business he did own a vehicle aswell as many other things, which he left somewhere in Florida.
My main question is about the vehicle, is there a way i can find it and reclaim it…aswell as the other property. Thanks in Advance.
I should think you could contact an automotive body that operates as well as registration one to locate its where abouts if not try the police department. And with your inheritace one would think its a legal issue as far as documents go. Did some other person claim it if so you can contest it in a court of law or if not find out what he had in the estate and trace it or contact those bodies.
After these many years I do not think you would have much luck claiming anything. Is a complex legal issue now and you should consult a lawyer for advice. Good-luck my friend. Sorry to hear you lost your father.
Who told you that you are the Beneficiary? At the age of 13 (when your dad died) I find that very hard to believe. Most people who have kids do not name them Beneficiaries. Monies, Property is normally kept in a Trust until they are older. It could also still be in the hands of his Lawyer until you probably reach the age of 21.
First thing you should do is find out if your father had left a Will. Over here in NZ we can go to a Government Department for this … and they will send a copy for about $20.
Then, on the Will (if you get one), it will have the Lawyers name on it. Do not go to the Lawers until you have a copy of the Will in your hands. By obtaining a copy of the Will from your Government Department it will show that the Will has already been read, and possibly monies, property distributed. Then you can see who got what. If the Government Department has not got a copy of the will … then it has not been read, or there was never a Will in the first place.
Ring them up. It will probably be in Archives. Do it now because I received my Grandmothers Will (she died 40 years ago) and found out that my father and his brother had inherited a lot of land in the South Island of New Zealand. My father never got anything, but I think that his brother (my uncle) did.
When I rang the Lawyer he had died and someone else had taken over his Business … and threw out everything that was over 20 years old.
You never know, but with you being only 13 years of age when your father died, someone else might have been named Beneficiary.
Look into it quickly …… and good luck.
