Does anyone know anything about becoming a Sonographer/Ultrasound Tech and or Radiology?

I’m thinking about going back to school and I only have my GED. I have a few questions for someone who has this profession if they can answer them. I’m looking into going to a local college and I’m wondering if a regular college (not a community college) will require me to have all my basic classes before I can go for my major? It appears that it would take 4 yrs to become a Sonographer/Ultrasound Tech, but is that including the time it takes to do your basic courses? Also, was it hard for you to find a job with that certification alone or did you have to become an RN or Dental Assistant as well? If you could just outline the steps you took to become either an x-ray tech or ultrasound tech, that would be great! I’m just trying to get an idea of what I would have to do to acquire a position in something similar to the people who take x-rays or do ultrasounds on pregnant women and so on. Thank you for any help you can give me.

You will need some college courses or pre-reqs prior to the program. Currently with the courses needed and the ultrasound program, you should be able to complete this in two to three years. Make certain you apply to a program that has accreditation status and not some of the fly by night programs out there. I have been a sonographer for over 28 years and this career path offers many opportunities in either travel, applications, hospital, or office setting. You do not need an x-ray background to do ultrasound. My path was via Surgical Technology. That too is another great career choice, though the pay is not as high as a sonographer. Good luck on your career choice.
